„Good employees want flexible employers“

Bockholdt GmbH & Co. KG with its headquarters in Lübeck supports about 5,000 properties – from industrial operations to clinics – with approx. 6,500 employees. To retain qualified employees such as sales manager Marc Bosshartt in the long term, HR manager Barbara Lentwojt relies on individual solutions.

Ms. Lentwojt, is it particularly nice for employees to work at BOCKHOLDT?

Lentwojt: I hope so (laughs). In any case, we do a number of things to ensure that our employees feel happy working for us. At the end of the day, we work in an industry that everyone needs, but hardly anyone knows. So we have to continue to be attractive as an employer.

How do you achieve that?

Lentwojt: We don’t consider ourselves to be a corporation. Instead, we view ourselves as a big team that can only be successful if our interaction works. For this reason, we are very specific when choosing which employees will suit us and create the conditions for them to use their full potential with us.

Do you have an example?

Lentwojt: For example, we set up a kindergarten where single mothers can leave their children to be cared for. We also train our employees in our own Academy, working together with external educational institutions and vocational training centres and supporting employees in their dual degree courses – like Mr. Bosshartt.

Mr. Bosshartt, you live in Hamburg and work in Lübeck?

Bosshartt: Initially yes, but that was simply too time-intensive and very stressful in the long run. Luckily, my employer was very accommodating: Today, I mainly work in our Hamburg branch. I only travel to the headquarters if I need to.

Have you successfully completed your degree?

Bosshartt: Yes. Now I am an industrial engineer and sales manager at BOCKHOLDT. My mentor within the company and many of my colleagues have provided me with some great support along the way. I have never worked in a team before that works so well.

Lentwojt: These are our three arguments in the competition for good employees: Being like a large family is not just a catchphrase for us. We really strive to be so; we want our employees to learn and further develop; and we help them by being flexible and working together to find the best solutions.
